Orca Whale- Mount Baker

Orca with Mt Baker_DSC5016_CW-5016

It’s been a while because I have been having problems posting photographs. Have not figured out what the problem is, but today it worked!

Anyway, I just got back from a week spent in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Spent a few of those days photographing Orca whales. Not easy to say the least between not knowing where the whales are going to pop up, the rocking of the boat and using a telephoto lens. I was fortunate enough to get a few good photos, one of which is above.

Unlike in the movies, Orcas are gentle, at least toward humans, and playful creatures. The only recorded attacks on humans have been from Orcas held in captivity. Can’t blame them. They are prisoners at places like Sea World.  They are considered endangered due to oil spills, a decline in the wild salmon population and pollution of the waters.
